Healthy Apple Donuts
Ready in less than 5 minutes, only contain wholesome ingredients + can be made into a variety of choices!
You can’t go wrong with this recipe and kids will love them! During my summer health and wellness camp, this was one of the top-rated snack recipes I made with kids. Kids loved having the choice to make their own and loved the taste! Oh, and they only take 5 minutes to make, which is almost too good to be true when you’re a busy mama. I also have to admit, that even though these are a kid friendly snack, I eat them by myself…….all the time. And (my husband would hate that I’m telling you this) but he too, eats them all the time in his lunch and we are both adults. My point is, this snack does not discriminate.
*Quality ingredients tip:
Make sure to read your food labels before purchasing products like nut butters and granola. A lot big companies like to sneak in added sugars with names like brown rice syrup, high fructose corn syrup etc. They also like to add unnecessary oils and artificial flavors to nut butters. So, when picking out a nut butter, make a point to look at the ingredients label. If the label has more than 2 ingredients I suggest putting it back on the shelf. Classic nut butters should only contain 1-2 ingredients tops! For example, popular peanut butter brands have a lot of unnecessary added ingredients like palm oil, sugar etc. You don’t need (or want) any of that nonsense. So, the next time you pick up a jar of peanut butter (or any nut butter) make sure it only contains 1-2 ingredients, which in this case should read something like,
Ingredients: “Dry- roasted organic blanched peanuts, salt.”
This way you can be assured you and your family are only eating clean wholesome food products.
Ingredients:
1 cored, sliced apple (sliced in full circles)
2 Tablespoons of your favorite nut butter (Peanut, Almond, Cashew etc.)
1 Tablespoon gluten free granola
drizzle of honey
Optional ingredient toppings:
1 Tablespoon dairy free dark chocolate chips
1 Tablespoon pepitas (pumpkin seeds)
1 teaspoon shredded coconut
10 raisins
10 dried cranberries
sprinkle of cinnamon
sprinkle of bee pollen
Directions:
Step 1
Core a medium sized apple and cut into 6-7 donut shaped slices. I personally love pink lady apples, but any will do.
Step 2
Next, spread the nut butter of your choice over the donut shaped slices until nice and evenly spread. Sprinkle your favorite granola and finish with a drizzle of honey. Feel free to add a variety of toppings to each of your apple donut slices. You can use my optional ingredients list above, or feel free to make your own creation! These snacks are perfect for after school or in the mornings as a nice breakfast treat. Full of fiber, protein, healthy fats and vitamins.
